Joe Caruana´s life

“ I paint more in my head that I do on canvas, this is because I tend to think out my paintings for much longer than I actually spend painting it”. Says Joe Caruana who was born in the Rock of Gibraltar.
“ To decide what to paint, how to present it, to include or leave out substance, then to decide what combination of colours to choose, that will be agreeable and acceptable is a monumental challenge for any artist”
“ It is generally thought that painting is a relaxing past-time, but it is not for a commercial artist, trying to please a public with multiple tastes is not an easy task. The artist’s thought is always, ‘ will my client like it?”
“ I consider myself a polyfacetted painter, that is that I like to vary my subjects, one thing I cannot as yet paint well are faces, for example I shall not attempt to paint faces like Picasso, he is the only painter that can get away with such daring faces with success”.
“ I like to paint Still Life, Sea-Scapes and Marinas, Florals, Sailing boats, Landscapes, Chalets and Yachts, these I like a lot.”
“ I come from a sea faring family and I learnt to walk on the deck of a boat, though I easily get sea-sick, and my regular place of painting is at the Puerto La Duquesa where I will sit during the cool summer evenings.”
I have also painted at Puerto Soto Grande and Estepona”.
“Apart from my regular clients and friends at these ports my paintings are ordered by visitors.  For this reason my paintings have travelled far and wide to places like Australia, the Philippines, Japan, France, Canada, USA,

Argentina, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Ireland and Ulster, UK and of course to many Cities in Spain”.

“ The gratifying thing for me is that many of my clients have become friends who look me up when they visit, we meet not only for a painting but for a drink and a chat.”
“The other gratifying thing is that not only does a client say that they ‘like’ your painting, but they pay you for it and then the greatest of all honours, they hang it in their living rooms.”
“ This coming year I intend to add to my collection paintings of figures and animals.” This is Joe’s immediate challenge.
But Joe was not always a painter, he is a man with many interests and equally active at them. Joe’s was in engineering in his younger days, he was a Designer in the Industrial Diamond industry, and owned his own company in Canada where he lived for twelve years. But before Canada Joe was an Elected politician in his native Gibraltar from 1969 to 1975, this was when the border between Gibraltar and Spain was closed. Joe had the portfolios of Minister for Health and Medical Services and later Minister for Public Works. Though his public spirit did not end there, on his return from Canada to this part of the world Joe, started the first Rehabilitation Centre in the Gibraltar area; he was in fact a pioneer when he started this in 1987. Hundreds of young and old were treated at his beloved Camp Emmanuel.

Joe still continues to help those who come to him but he no longer has his Centre, and Joe still keeps on the fringes of politics writing his ‘opinions’ in the press. As if counselling, politics and paintings were not enough this energetic and likable person has now written his memoirs about his family roots and his travels, which he has aptly called “ Spirit of the Phoenician”, the book is expected to come out in print around May 2009.

As a painter Joe intends to continue with the challenged of looking for new styles and colours.
He has already held a few private exhibitions and belongs to the Gibraltar Fine Art Society. Other exhibitions are in the pipeline.
